Curriculum Programs Offered

The College provides an extensive program in the eight Key Learning Areas which is accessible to all students. The comprehensive curriculum is designed to give every student the best opportunity to develop his or her abilities. Students learn in a co-operative environment that emphasises sound literacy and numeracy skills. Enhancement programs and the catering for individual needs in our mixed ability classrooms from Year 7 through to the post compulsory years is a feature of the curriculum provided at the College. Sebastopol College is actively involved in the Bright Futures program and has curriculum program links with primary schools and further education providers.

Year 7 to Year 10

Students entering Year 7 have a choice of languages other than English and the opportunity to experience a broad range of Arts, Technology, Music and Sports/Physical Education programs. While emphasis is placed on students experiencing successful academic development in all the Key Learning Areas from years 7 to 10, there is further opportunity to experience specialised learning interests in years 9 and 10 through an extensive range of elective studies. This flexible structure for programs of study provides for individual student direction in the post compulsory years. The Post Compulsory Years

The College offers a very broad range of Victorian Certificate of Education (V.C.E.), Vocational Educational & Training (V.E.T) and Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning V.C.A.L) studies that can be packaged into student programs which provide pathways for tertiary, further education, training and employment. Arrangements with Technical and Further Education (T.A.F.E.) providers enable "credit transfer" and "dual recognition" of studies and programs provided at the College. Students in year 10 are also able to undertake studies in this extensive and flexible V.C.E. / V.E.T programs provided at Sebastopol College. The College has strong links with local industry and these provide work placed learning opportunities relevant to students and career pathways. The College is a registered provider of training programs. Students study within a managed environment that emphasises increased personal responsibility for learning.

Other College Curriculum Features Include:

Strong emphasis is placed on ensuring a sound foundation in secondary school years for Literacy and Numeracy skills. The College has specialist Literacy staff that work closely with parents and students in further developing language skills. Numeracy programs that enhance individual performance are another feature of the College curriculum.

Learning enhancement programs that develop and promote knowledge, skills, values and attitudes underpin each Key Learning Area at the College. A Bright Futures program operates throughout the College with direct links in primary school activities.

Specialist integration teaching and support staff work with students and classes to provide additional assistance for individual learning programs.

An Exemplary Sport/Physical Education program is provided where all students actively participate. The College has a notable sporting record for girls and boys - individually and teams, within regional and State level competition. An important feature of the program is the emphasis on participation, leadership and responsibility. The College Specialist Sports program focuses on Swimming, Soccer and Volleyball. An extensive Music program for individuals, bands and choirs is conducted in the Music Centre. All students are actively encouraged to participate in these programs. The College has successfully competed in the Rock Eisteddfod and has a very successful track record. Students from the College have been invited to perform internationally for both Rock Eisteddfod and Drama productions.

"State of the art learning technologies" are incorporated throughout the College supporting all curriculum areas. The College is recognised as a leader in the field of computer technology supported curriculum learning programs. There a strong emphasis on providing students with skills relevant to the world into which they will enter on leaving school. All students can readily access the "learning technologies" facilities at the College. The College supports a large community InterNet program that links with local primary schools and beyond.

A comprehensive range of Visual and Performing Arts programs from Year 7 through to the post compulsory years. The Computer Aided Design Studies and Graphic Arts programs have received considerable recognition.

The languages other than English program links directly with local primary schools to ensure continuity in learning. The College offers a choice of Chinese and German language studies. Students have been involved in study tours that support their language development. The College has developed strong links with China in recent years through exchange visits from students and teaching staff.

The breadth and depth of Technology curriculum programs to develop valuable skills has been a well established feature of the College. These programs include Technological Design and Development, Materials Technology and Information Technology. Whether it be Foods, Electronics, Automotive, Woods or Metals, students are able to undertake studies in these areas from Year 7 through to their post compulsory years.

Outdoor Education programs which develop important personal skills are available to all students. The first of these valuable learning programs is experienced during the Year 7 Orientation Program where students are involved in a camp that includes orienteering, canoeing and bush walking. Students are able to continue their interest in Outdoor Education through to their post compulsory years of study at the College.

The Transition Program for students entering Year 7 at the College is closely co-ordinated with the local primary schools to enable continuity in learning and development. The College underpins this program through targeted Years 5 to 8 support links.

Students are encouraged to participate in extra curricula activities that emphasise team work, leadership, responsibility and a sense of commitment to the community.
