Term One Sports Report
The sport in first term has been action packed with many teams and individuals participating.
ATHLETICS
At the commencement of the school year, a large group of students travelled to Olympic Park to see the International Athletics Grand Prix. Many students returned with photos and athlete signatures.
The College entered three teams in the Sportsbiz Challenge on March 22nd; a 3000m race down Sturt street, Victoria street, finishing in the Bridge Mall. Our teams finished second, third, and fourth. Our first finisher and fastest runner was Anthony Taylor.
SOCCER
On March 28th and 29th, the Total Girls Soccer tournament included a Sebastopol College under 14 team, which comprised of a mix of year seven & year eights girls. These girls were novices playing against community club soccer teams. They only conceded a minimum number of goals during their round robin games, and finished off the competition against the section winners – Sebastopol Vikings with a 2 – 3 loss. The Sebastopol Vikings soccer club also had a number of College girls in their team. It was great to see a friendly rivalry in a close game amongst friends.
CYCLING
Joshua Liston competed in the Australian Cycle cup in Shepparton on April 1 & 2nd. He was riding in the individual track time trial, road race and cross country mountain biking. Full results will be posted when they come to hand.
HORSE RIDING
Catherine O’Driscoll and Kelsey Mason have competed in horse riding events with encouraging results. Full results will be posted shortly.
SWIMMING
The College was represented by a number of students in the VSSSA zone final swimming finals. Year 13, both boys and girls 4 x 50m freestyle relay teams competed and swam inside their winning time at the Ballarat carnival, but finished out of the placings.
Our champion girls 17 years 4 x 50m freestyle relay team smashed the Ballarat record by ten seconds, however they missed out on a placing by very fast oppositions. I cannot wait to see them in action next year!
Brooke Lonie, Cody Kirby, Ryan Noether, and Anthony Taylor all swam well in individual events but failed to qualify for the State finals in their events. However Rochelle McCumber swam into the State finals in the 15years 50m butterfly on April 2nd. Her results will be posted when available.
BSSSA team competition
The college teams competed in the term one BSSSA competitions with mixed results.
Volleyball – The College was represented by girls year 8, inter (year 9 & 10) and senior (11 & 12) teams with only the senior girls advancing to the VSSSA finals. These girls have swept the medals before them in the past. The will again represent Ballarat and the college in the coming finals on April 24th.
Cricket – The senior, inter (year 9 & 10 ), year 8 and year 7 boys and girls cricket teams have contested their BSSSA competition with the Inter boys winning in Ballarat and will represent Ballarat and the College in the VSSSA Zone final in November. We also have a very competitive girls year 8 cricket team that will represent Ballarat and the College in November. Both teams are expected to do well in their finals. The inter girls should be congratulated as they just failed to qualify by missing the BSSSA final by two runs. This is the best result for the college at an intermediate or senior level for many years. The year 7 boys also missed out in qualifying for the Zone finals by the Duckworth – Lewis rule that determined the outcome of their BSSSA final.
Tennis – Justin Hayward has done a tremendous job in putting together and coaching (with Kath O’Beirne) all year levels of tennis. Our tennis teams competed well but failed to qualify for the Zone finals.
